Weval — the critically acclaimed Dutch electronic duo of Harm Coolen and Merijn Scholte Albers — return with Chorophobia, their most extroverted and rhythmically charged album to date, released via Technicolour.
Following years of resisting the dancefloor, the pair found ironic inspiration in the term “chorophobia” — the fear of dancing — and chose to confront it head-on. Known for their textured, introspective sound, Weval instead dive into bold BPMs, big drops, and funk-laced grooves, pushing themselves creatively while still staying true to their identity.
Tracks like ‘Dopamine’ and the vibrant ‘Just Friends’ point to a liberated, genre-blurring direction, while the swirling acid tones of the title track, the psychedelic funk of ‘Better’, and the infectious ‘Head First’ — featuring an impromptu vocal cameo from KILIMANJARO’s brother — underline their fearless approach. Elsewhere, ‘Mercator’ offers a moment of reflection, bridging past and present.
From shadowy synth intros to euphoric highs, Chorophobia is designed for communal experience. It’s a striking evolution from a duo who’ve spent a decade sidestepping club tropes, only to find freedom in finally embracing them.
