This Heat emerged in 1976, shaping a volatile and highly original form of avant-garde rock across two albums and an EP. Their influence has since echoed through experimental music, informing artists from Sonic Youth to Radiohead.
Their debut, This Heat (often referred to as the ‘Blue and Yellow’), was recorded between 1976 and 1978 across various spaces, including their own Cold Storage studio in London. Blending tape loops, found sound and live performance, the group pushed early experiments in musique concrète and rhythmic collage—most notably on ‘24 Track Loop’.
Improvisation played a key role, with pieces like ‘Water’ formed spontaneously in the studio. The result is a dissonant, exploratory record that remains striking in its scope and approach.
Following their split in 1982, their reputation has steadily grown. With renewed interest in their work, Charles Bullen and Charles Hayward have launched a new imprint to reissue recordings from their archive.
