With a constantly changing line-up, there has always been one constant at THE THE: Matt Johnson. He is the front man and singer of the Band since it’s foundation in 1979, that finally made their global breakthrough in 1986 with their album “Infected” which featured two of the band’s groundbreaking political singles “Sweet Bird Of Truth” and “Heartland. After focusing on different projects for over 20 years, Matt Johnson, who writes and produces most of the songs, made a remarkable comeback in 2021 with THE THE’s #1 live release The Comeback Special. Proving the key that turned the lock, Johnson has subsequently gone from being relatively inactive to being the busiest man in music. In 2019, Johnson scored a THE THE soundtrack to Gerard Johnson’s Muscle and released subsequent singles, ‘I Want 2 B U’ and ‘$1 ONE VOTE!’. The first new studio album of entirely original THE THE songs, Ensoulment, was released in 2024 and accompanied by the Ensouled World Tour. THE PRODUCT This strictly limited 7” vinyl single features the unreleased songs ‘Unrequited’ and ‘Live & Let Live’, taken from the soundtrack of the upcoming film Odyssey, directed by Gerrard Johnson, Matt Johnson’s brother. The music was written and produced by Matt Johnson himself, recorded at Studio Cinéola in London. He played all instruments himself, combining minimal electronic funk, motorik beats, and eerie atmospherics, with Gillian Glover joining him on vocals for both tracks featured on this single. The sleeves feature two powerful – and previously unseen – artworks by Matt’s late brother, Andy Dog. The full film Odyssey, a stylish, blackly comic metaphysical thriller set in the shadows of London’s housing crisis and the ruthless world of greed, addiction, and survival, will be released in November.
