Duke Ellington in a small group setting like this would be enough of a treat, but when the other key member of that small group is John Coltrane you are guaranteed quality. This was one of three consecutive albums of John Coltrane that focussed on more accessible material, never middle of the road, he released this album, then Ballads then John Coltrane Johnny Hartman. After that it was just few short step to the more intense searching Crescent ended one chapter and the much celebrated A Love Supreme heralded the beginning of the spiritual searching and freer jazz of his latter period.
