The complete album + bonus track - limited edition pressing on 180g vinyl. 'Portrait in Jazz' was Bill Evans' third album as a leader, following 'New Jazz Conceptions' (1956) and 'Everybody Digs Bill Evans' (1958). It was also Evans' first LP with the talented bassist Scott LaFaro. As opposed to his previous albums, there are no solo piano selections included here - the trio is heard throughout the whole LP.
The Evans/LaFaro/Motian collaboration most famously reached its climax with their live recordings from the Village Vanguard in New York in June 1961. Tragically, LaFaro died in a car accident the following month, ending one of the greatest jazz trios of all-time.
"If there's any doubt that Evans is one of the freshest things to happen to the piano in the last few years, this album should dispel any such feelings. The trio is a tightly integrated unit. Here is an album with meaning - here is truth." - ***** Don DeMicheal, Down Beat
Includes the bonus track "Blue in Green" (alternate take) from the same session but not included on the original LP.
