Alien Ant Farm's ANThology arrived in 2001, back when every second rock band seemed contractually obliged to wear oversized trousers and tune their guitars to somewhere near sea level. The California quartet were certainly part of that moment, though there was usually an unshakeable hook lurking beneath the distortion. Their breakthrough came via a wildly successful take on Michael Jackson's 'Smooth Criminal', but the album's real strength lies elsewhere. 'Movies' remains an infectious slice of alternative rock, and 'Universe' closes things on a more open-ended note. A genuine snapshot of the nu metal era, albeit one with a little more charm than most of its contemporaries.
